The Loud Ones

Known as the crested loud mouth, Parasaurions are most closely related to Parasaurolophus or the Parasaur. Paras are known for being loud because in parasaurs this crest functions as a resonating chamber that makes low noises to communicate with their families. When using their crest to make their call intentionally it will sound similar to an elk’s call. Paras can be made to make their sounds by accident by making them laugh, cry, or excited. When by accident its sound varies by the individual ranging from quacks to chirps to bellows. Their sounds can also be observed by seeing a Para with their herd, they’ll use their sounds to communicate. Para live in small groups of 3-4, not as much as Ceras but more than stegos and tend to be on the short side ranging from 3’5” to 4’5” with crest they’re about 6-10 inches taller.

Parasaur crests can vary in a few ways, clubs, sharp, and frilled. Clubs are an adaptation used by paras to bang on tall trees to make loose fruits and vegetation fall down. Sharp crests are pointed to harm predators that might pounce on them, and frilled crests amplify sounds produced by the crest. Among their other adaptations is their ears. Although they’re faster than Ceras and Stegos, Paras offset a lot of heat by moving quickly and still have large ears. But rather than being large and fanned out they sit upright or slicked back with their head. They’ll perk their ears up to hear predators which doesn’t serve much of a purpose nowadays but instead these large ears are good for hearing the range of tones in voices and calls making them incredibly empathetic.

Parasaurion personalities tend to vary the most, some are embarrassed by their sounds, some take pride in how loud they can get because the louder they are the safer the herd is. Their personalities commonly run the gamut. A weird trait they’ve developed is when they run or get excited they may walk and run on all fours. Their body isn’t developed for this so they’re actually slower on all fours. They don’t like being made fun of for this behavior because it’s instinctual, it’s a behavior left over from their ancestors and even baby para walk on all fours from birth having to learn bipedal posture as they grow.
