Reproduction & Gender

Saurions are capable of breeding with most species and having children. This is because of their naturally adaptive biology. Male saurion look like males of most species, females as well, but their third sex Xale are able to reproduce with both sexes and change their biology to do so. This process takes a few months, but Xales are capable of egg laying and live birth like Female Saurions and capable of insemination like males. I won’t go into detail here because the explanation is very adult. The important thing is Saurions don’t care about sex, and don’t have a concept of gender on the island. The ones living with other societies will choose to identify as a gender they feel represents their identity best. Sex has no bearing on their gender identity.

Most saurion are pansexual (about 50%), not caring about the sex or gender identity of their partners. But Saurion don’t typically label their sexuality and just often describes it as “I like who I like”. There are Saurion who do have preferences though but with the existence of a third sex concepts like straight don’t exist they’ll say “I prefer ___ sex or gender”. Should a pair or polycule be incapable of reproduction they’ll ask a friend to play surrogate or give them an egg. Polycules are pretty common among saurion as well, because most subspecies of saurion are happiest in groups.

Saurion females and xales are both capable of live birth and reproduction, live birth is achieved by not laying the egg or it becoming inseminated before being laid. The egg will stay in their womb and continue to develop, as the baby grows the egg’s membrane softens and thins. Then live birth proceeds like it would with mammals. Saurions will choose whether they want to do live birth or lay an egg as there are benefits to each. Live pregnancies last 6 months then they give birth to 1 saurion, with twins being incredibly rare. Live birth Saurions will need to be cared for by their parents longer before they’re able to take care of themselves. Female and Xale saurions may prefer a live birth if they’re moving around a lot or wish to care for the baby longer or want to bond with their child more. Saurions who like egg laying are likely doing it as a surrogate, or like the independence egg born saurions show. Children from eggs require less nutrients and can walk sooner since the egg provided every nutrient they need. Live births mean the baby only gets nutrients from what the parent consumes. Eggs are also more likely to have twins. Eggs however take longer and are best for parents who don’t plan to move anytime soon.

Saurion don’t typically breast feed, as most don’t grow breasts. The ones who do are likely Hysaurian, or have mammal genetics way back in their bloodline. Your saurion can have breasts regardless of whether they’re Hysaurian or not. Any sex of Saurian can grow breasts. The saurian language is nongendered so they’ll never misgender someone.
